About Residency Museum Lucknow

Residency Museum is currently a nationally preserved monument. The residency museum was started in Lucknow by contemporary Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1780, which was later completed in 1800 by Nawab Saadat Ali. Residency lived in Lucknow, the capital of the province of Awadh, the residence of British East India Company officials. The entire complex consisted mainly of five to six buildings, in which the main building, Banquet Hall, the house of Doctor Faier, Begum Kothi, a mosque near the Begum Kothi and the Treasury were the chiefs.


About the Museum

Today the ruins of these buildings are left. The ruins of Residency remind us of the Great Revolt of Lucknow in 1857. They are preserved in the status quo, in which they came under central protection in 1920. This museum has been established keeping in view its importance during the first struggle of Indian independence. This museum is located in a part of main residency building and it was used to first display a model of residency complex.

This museum has been prepared to present the visible details of the independence struggle of 1857 and contains residency models, old photographs, inscriptions, paintings, documents, objects related to periods such as guns, swords, shields, guns, ranks, badges And other things are present. Photographs and paintings on canvas are included in the exhibits, in which some war in residency and other related items are shown.

The items displayed are presented in chronological order of 1857. Along with human paintings of the local heroes, original photographs related to the revolt and images showing the important incidents of inscriptions and revolutions from many places have been displayed. In Lucknow which was the center of the revolt of 1857, many maps showing strategic situations, map of residency and graphic layout of the gallery have also been displayed.

This museum is divided into two parts-ground floor and basement. From a large double portico portico to the ground can be entered on the ground in the south direction. A small room made at the entrance is reached in the lighthouses located on the ground floor and is accessible from the curved stairs to the galleries located in the basement. There are four galleries in the ground floor and there are seven galleries in the basement.

Recently a new gallery has been added to the museum basement, in which there is art objects found during excavation in the southern part of the residency. These include terracotta many human and animal sculptures, a pistol, ceramic pot, cannon shells, terracotta tile, pieces of wine bottles and a silver-flyer.
