Celebrated on November 24, 2026, Dev Diwali features 10 lakh glowing lamps across 84 ghats. Our special package add-on includes pre-booked boat seats so you can comfortably watch the laser show and lighted ghats directly from the Ganges.
Dev Diwali is one of the most magical spiritual festivals in the world. Here is the full story behind why it is celebrated and what makes it so special in Varanasi:
Event Date: November 24, 2026 (Kartik Purnima full moon night).
Story of Lord Shiva: Long ago, a powerful demon named Tripuraasura conquered the three worlds and caused great trouble for everyone. Lord Shiva fought a grand battle and destroyed the demon on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Kartik.
The Gods Descend to Kashi: After Lord Shiva defeated the demon, all the gods and goddesses in heaven were filled with joy. To celebrate this great victory, they came down to the holy city of Kashi (Varanasi). They lit thousands of earthen lamps (diyas) along the banks of the Ganges River. That is why this day is called Dev Diwali—the Diwali of the Gods.
Blessing For Every Year: People believe that every year on Kartik Purnima (November 24, 2026), the gods still visit Varanasi to take a dip in the Ganges River. To welcome the gods to earth, local residents, priests, and pilgrims gather to clean and decorate the entire riverfront.
The Grand Sight of 10 Lakh Lamps: As the sun sets, all 84 river ghats light up at the same time with over 10 lakh (1 million) earthen lamps. The glowing flame of every diya reflects on the water, turning the entire 7-kilometer riverfront into a magnificent sea of golden lights.
Due to extreme heavy demand during Dev Diwali, boat prices rise and tickets sell out months in advance. Our special festival add-on ensures you have a stress-free, front-row seat to the celebrations:
Guaranteed spot on a private or shared wooden motorboat reserved well in advance—no last-minute haggling or long waits at the crowded ghats.
Watch the world-famous Dashashwamedh Ghat Ganga Aarti and colorful fireworks display directly from the middle of the river Ganges.
Enjoy clear views of the special laser projection show on Chet Singh Ghat that tells the ancient history of Kashi.
Our dedicated tour assistant helps your group navigate the festival crowd safely, ensuring a smooth walk to your assigned boat loading area.
What It Is: One of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and the spiritual heart of Varanasi.
The Story & History:
According to ancient Hindu Scriptures, Lord Shiva chose Varanasi as his earthly home. The name Vishwanath means "Ruler of the Universe." It is believed that the city rests on the trident (trishul) of Lord Shiva, making it immune to total destruction.
Over the centuries, the original temple was destroyed and rebuilt several times by different rulers. The present structure was constructed in 1780 by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Later in 1839, Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab donated 1,000 kilograms of pure gold to cover the temple's iconic spires (shikhars).
Why Visit: Walk through the grand Kashi Vishwanath Corridor built in 2021, which directly connects the holy temple sanctum to the banks of the Ganges River.
What It Is: The main and most vibrant river ghat in Varanasi, famous for its daily evening Ganga Aarti.
The Story & History:
Legend says Lord Brahma (the creator god) performed a grand horse sacrifice here called the Dasa-Ashwamedha Yajna (sacrifice of 10 horses) to welcome Lord Shiva back to Kashi.
Another legend states that Lord Brahma created this ghat specifically to welcome Lord Shiva to the city.
Why Visit: Watch the grand evening Ganga Aarti ritual. Every sunset, young priests dressed in traditional attire hold massive multi-layered brass lamps, burning incense, and blow conch shells in rhythmic worship to Mother Ganga.
What It Is: A peaceful historical site located 10 km from Varanasi city center, revered globally by Buddhist pilgrims.
The Story & History:
After attaining enlightenment under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, Lord Buddha walked to Sarnath (then known as Isipatana). Here, in the famous Deer Park, he delivered his very first sermon to his five original disciples. This event is known in history as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (Turning the Wheel of Dharma).
Emperor Ashoka visited Sarnath in the 3rd century BCE and built massive stupas and pillars, including the famous Lion Capital of Ashoka, which is today the national emblem of India.
Why Visit: Explore the massive Dhamek Stupa, the ancient monastery ruins, and the Sarnath Archaeological Museum.
What It Is: The two principal, ancient cremation ghats of Kashi where fires burn continuously 24/7.
The Story & History:
Manikarnika Story: Legend says Lord Vishnu dug a pond (chakra-pushkarini) here for Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. While bathing, Mata Parvati dropped her ear ornament (Manikarnika) into the water. Lord Shiva blessed the spot, declaring that anyone cremated here will break the cycle of rebirth and achieve instant salvation (Moksha).
Harishchandra Story: Named after the legendary King Harishchandra, who worked at this cremation ground as a humble keeper to uphold truth and duty (Dharma) after losing his kingdom.
Why Visit: Experience the deep spiritual philosophy of Hinduism, where death is viewed not with fear, but as a peaceful passage to liberation.
What It Is: An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Kaal Bhairav, a fierce avatar of Lord Shiva.
The Story & History:
According to myth, when a dispute arose between Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva, Lord Shiva created Kaal Bhairav from his anger. Kaal Bhairav cut off Brahma's fifth head. To cleanse the sin of killing a creator, Kaal Bhairav traveled the world carrying the skull. When he reached Kashi, the skull fell from his hand, and he was freed from the sin.
Shiva appointed Kaal Bhairav as the "Kotwal" (Chief Police Officer/Guardian Deity) of Kashi. Ancient belief dictates that everyone living in or visiting Varanasi needs Kaal Bhairav’s permission to stay safely.
Why Visit: Tradition holds that every pilgrim must visit Kaal Bhairav Mandir to seek permission and protection to complete their Kashi Yatra.
New Vishwanath Temple (BHU Birla Mandir):
History: Envisioned by Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya (founder of Banaras Hindu University) and constructed by the industrialist Birla family in 1966.
Significance: Open to people of all castes and religions, it features a marble tower that rises 77 meters high, making it one of the tallest temple towers in Asia.
Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple:
History: Founded by the famous saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas in the early 16th century. Legend says Tulsidas had a direct divine vision (darshan) of Lord Hanuman at this exact spot.
Significance: The name Sankat Mochan means "Reliever of Troubles." Pilgrims visit on Tuesdays and Saturdays to offer sweet besan laddoos for peace and prosperity.
Durga & Tulsi Manas Mandir:
Durga Mandir: Built in the 18th century by a Bengali Maharani. It features red sandstone architecture and is dedicated to Goddess Durga, who is believed to protect the city from southern directions.
Tulsi Manas Mandir: Built in 1964 at the exact location where Tulsidas wrote the famous epic Ramcharitmanas in simple Awadhi language, making the Ramayana accessible to common people.
Mobile phones, electronic devices, leather belts, and cameras are prohibited inside the inner temple sanctum. Free lockers are available near the temple security check-points to safely store your personal items before entry.
