Aircraft can be landed in Jollygrant in case of emergency, 20 aircraft can be parked
Summary
Following the successful completion of Phase II, the airport now boasts 10 spacious parking stands designated for large aircraft (code-C) and an additional 10 stands for small aircraft (code-B). This expansion offers significant advantages not only to Dehradun but also to neighboring airports.
Expansion
As Phase II of the Dehradun Airport nears completion, an exciting development awaits. The number of aircraft parking stands at the airport will expand significantly, from the existing 11 to a total of 20. This expansion will enable the convenient parking of ten small and ten large aircraft. Once completed, the enhanced capacity will not only benefit Dehradun but also serve as a vital alternative for landing planes during unfavorable weather conditions or emergencies at the Jollygrant Airport in Delhi.
According to Airport General Manager Prabhakar Mishra, the completion of the ongoing construction work will result in a significant increase in the terminal area, reaching approximately 42,776 square meters. This expansion will offer nearly ten times more space compared to the old terminal. Currently, the new terminal is nearing completion, with approximately 90 percent of the work already finished. The expanded terminal will provide improved facilities and enhanced capacity to cater to the growing needs of passengers, ensuring a more comfortable and efficient travel experience.
Currently, construction is underway on a 28,729-square-meter area at the airport. This area has a peak-hour capacity of accommodating 1,200 passengers. However, once the terminal work is completed, the capacity will increase to 1,800 passengers. The new terminal will feature 36 check-in counters, enabling passengers to save time during check-in and other related processes. This expansion will significantly enhance efficiency and reduce wait times, ensuring a smoother and more streamlined experience for travelers at the airport.
Delhi’s air traffic problem will also reduce
Prabhakar Mishra, the Airport General Manager, has stated that upon the completion of Phase II, the airport will have the capacity to accommodate 10 parking stands for large aircraft (code-C) and 10 stands for small aircraft (code-B). This expansion will not only benefit planes arriving in Dehradun but will also extend its advantages to nearby airports. The increased parking capacity will facilitate convenient and efficient parking arrangements for airplanes, enhancing connectivity and convenience for air travel in the region.
One of the significant advantages will be observed at Delhi airport. In the event of adverse weather conditions or emergencies, flights bound for Delhi can be diverted and safely land at Jollygrant Airport. This arrangement not only ensures the safety of passengers but also helps alleviate air traffic congestion issues in Delhi to a considerable extent. Additionally, Dehradun Airport can serve as an alternative landing option for nearby airports like Lucknow, Jammu, and Srinagar in case they encounter bad weather or technical difficulties.
Airport became Grade-2, Prabhakar Mishra became General Manager
In a recent development, Dehradun Airport has been upgraded from Grade-3 to Grade-2 status due to surpassing 1.5 million passenger numbers in the year 2022-23. Consequently, Prabhakar Mishra, who previously held the position of Joint General Manager, has now been promoted to the role of General Manager. This elevation brings his post to par with the General Manager position within the Airport Authority of India.
