Tungnath Temple
Tungnath is the world's highest temple of Shiva situated at an altitude of 4000M. Temple is known as Tritiya Kedar. It's one of the Panch Kedar (Parts of Kedarnath temple) in India. According to the legend, the Panch Kedar & Chota Chardham are related to Pandavas (Heroes of Mahabharat epic). As they had a war with their cousin brothers & killed them. So they had a curse of killing their brothers. Thus they left their kingdom in search of Lord Shiva to seek his blessings. The Pandavas went to different cities in search of Almighty Shiva but Shiva was avoiding them because they killed their cousins in the Kurukshetra war. So he (Shiva) assumed the form of a Bull & hide in The Garhwal region. The place Lord Shiva was hiding from Pandavas was known as Guptkashi (The Hidden Banaras). When they reach Garhwal they have seen a Bull grazing in the field. The Bhim second brother of Pandavas has recognized the bull as Shiva. Bhim caught the bull from his tail & back legs. Bull disappears into the ground & appears in the form of Panch Kedar (Different parts of Bull's body appear at different places). As Hump came out at Kedarnath Temple, arms came out in Tungnath, the face came out at Rudranath, Nabhi (Neval) came out in Madmaheshwar & hairs appear in Kalpeshwar so all of them are known as Panch Kedar. The Pandavas were blessed by Shiva in these forms so they built temples in every place to worship Shiva. It's a 04 km difficult trek to reach the temple. During winter from Dec to March the temple is closed due to heavy snowfall.
Chandrashila
The peak is 02 km from the Tungnath temple known as Chandrshila. Which is situated 4100M above sea level. Chandrama (Moon) falls in love with the girl name Rohini & cursed by King Daksha. Thus Chandrama (Moon) got Tuberculosis disease. So Chandrama wants to be free from the curse he has meditated on. After this incident, this place was known as Chandrshila. Tourists can enjoy a 360 - degree view from the top of the peak if the weather is clear. Shiva did not want to give darshan to the Pandavas, so he took the form of a buffalo and started living in the Himalayas. Bhima, who was one of the five brothers, recognized them and grabbed the tail and legs. Shiva wanted to be free so he disappeared in-ground & the body part of Shiva came out at different places. As Hump came out at Kedarnath Temple, arms came out in Tungnath, the face came out at Rudranath, Nabhi (Neval) came out in Madmaheshwar & hairs appeared in Kalpeshwar so all of them were known as Panch Kedar.
