About Nainital City: The City was founded by P. Barron in 1841 by a sugar trader from Shahjahanpur. Nainital has an ancient temple known as Naina Devi temple. Nainital city has got its name from this temple Nain as Eyes & Tal as Lake thus its called as Nainital. Naina Devi Temple is one of the 52 Shakti Peeth dedicated to Goddess Sati. It is believed that Sati's Eyes were fallen here while Lord Shiva was carrying Sati's dead body to the Himalayas. There is a Tibetan market near the temple which attracts tourists for shopping.
Nainital comes under British rule after Gurkha War (1814-16). Mr P. Barron constructs a European house in Nainital. There are few older buildings in Nainital named St. John Church (1846), Alma lodge, Ashdale Cottage (1860). To escape the heat of plain areas British were setting their residence in Nainital as the weather of the city was always cold.
The disaster of 1880: Nainital has faced a really bad time on 18 September 1880 due to a landslide. A total of 151 people were died included 108 Indians & 43 Europeans. The Victoria Hotel, Assembly rooms & the Naina Devi temple were destroyed in a landslide. Later a new temple was built at the same spot.

The temple is famous for full filling the wish of devotees who come here (temple). Temple is the witness of the Nanda Devi Mela Festival which is held every year on Nandashtami during September.
02:- St. John in the wilderness: St. John in the wilderness is the oldest building of Nainital. The construction of the church started in October 1846 & inaugurated on 02 April 1848. The land for the Church was chosen by Bishop Daniel Wilson in 1844. The Church has a memorial for those killed in the 1880 landslide.
03:-Governor's House: Governor's House also known as Raj Bhawan of Uttarakhand situated in Nainital. Governor's House was started building in 1897 & it took 02 years to compleat. The designers of Raj Bhavan at Nainital were Architect Stevens and the Executive Engineer F. O. W. Ortel. After Independence, it was renamed Raj Bhavan.
04:-Tiffin Top: Tiffin Top also known as Dorothy's Seat. The place has a magnificent 360-degree view of Nainital city and the surrounding Kumaon mountains. Apart from a picnic spot amidst the calm and scenic view, Tiffin Top is a delight for photographers. You can reach Tiffin Top by an easy hike from the place called Bara Patthar.
05:- Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo: Nainital Zoo is also known as Pt. G. B. Pant High Altitude Zoo situated on 2100M from sea level. Which is the first high altitude Zoo in India. Nainital Zoo has started for people on 01 June 1995 & since 01 March 2002 Bharat Ratna G. B. Pant High Altitude Zoo management society, Nainital is managing the Zoo. The major attraction of Nainital Zoo is Bengal Tiger, Himalayan Black Bear, Blue Sheep, Red Panda, Tibetan Wolf & Various Pheasants.
06:- Gurney House: Gurney House is known as the residence of hunter Jim Corbett. The house was built in 1881 & it is located right next to Naini Lake in Nainital. Mr Sharda Prasad Verma has bought the house in 1947 from Jim Corbett's Sister when she was leaving for Kenya.
07:- Eco Cave Gardens: Eco cave gardens offer people a view of Himalayan wildlife through several animals cave. It managed by Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam. They have animals caves like Tiger Cave, Leopard Cave, Bats Cave, Squirrel Caves, Flying Fox Cave & Apes Cave.

01:- Naini Lake: Nainital Lake also known as Naini Lake situated in the Nainital Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. The lake has a shape of an eye/mango and famous for boating. It is believed that two sages visited the lake to blessed it by bathing in it. According to historical records, Mr p Barron was the first to visit Nainital in 1839.
02:- Bhimtal: According to historical record Bhimtal is older than Nainital city. The city got its name from Bhima of Mahabharata. It is believed Bhima visited this place during his banishment period. Bhimeswara Mahadev temple & an old Shiva Temple situated at the bank of Bhimtal Lake.
03:- Sattal: Sattal or Sat Tal means Seven lakes situated in Bhimtal. Place during British rule was used for tea plantation area of Kumaon. This lake is a paradise for migratory birds. Different species of fish can be seen in the lake also. Tourist from all over the world come here for bird watching. The birds in Sattal Red-Billed blue magpie, Kingfishers, Plum-headed Parakeet, Himalayan griffon.
04:- Naukuchiatal: Naukuchiatal is also known as "the lake with nine corners" situated 04km from Bhimtal & 26Km from Nainital. It is believed lake had a hidden route to China. People come here for different activities like bird watching, Paragliding, Boating & fishing.
05:- Hanuman Garhi Temple: The Hanuman Temple is situated at04Km from Nainital dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The temple is built in 1950 by Neem Karoli Baba. Inside the temple, they have 20 feet statue of Lord Hanuman.

Things to do in Nainital01:- Boating: The tourist who came to Nainital must try boating in Naini Lake. Boats are available for 30minutes to 01 hr for one family. The scenic view of Naini Lake will take your breath away. There are no entry fees for The Naini Lake visit but boating, they charge different rates according to the boat. The boats are charged at INR. 160/- rowboat half-round, INR. 250/- rowboat full-round, INR. 250/- paddle boat per hour. The Lake is open for tourist from 06:00 am to 06:00 pm.
02:- Hiking: Tiiifin top is known as a picnic destination. People go there for hiking also. View sunrise from the top is one of the best things to do. You can reach Tiffin top by hiking four Km from Ayarpatta, Nainital. Himalayan mountains look so pretty from the top of Tiffin Top. The place is open for tourist from 06:00 am to 06:00 pm throughout the year. Pony & Horse ride also available on a chargeable basis.
